Pedalling Through Dalmatian Islands
From the ancient roman Diocletian’s palace in Split to The Game of Thrones in Dubrovnik 8 days
1st Day SPLIT – THE ANCIENT EMPEROR’S RETIREMENT HOUSE
You will be introduced with the fascinating get-away house of one Roman Emperor! His name was Diocletian, and he decided to retire on this location and ordered a construction of his palace. Through centures, the palace became town of Split. We will do some sightseeing but a little bit different… on the bicycles! After sightseeing we’ll be heading to Salona, a historical location to check out remains of another ancient roman settlement in Dalmatia.
2nd Day HVAR – HOW FIT ARE YOU?
We are leaving Split in the morning by catching a ferry ride to island of Hvar. Although we did some pedalling yesterday, today will be our bike fitting day! We’ll start on easy loop route that will take us from Stari grad to Jelsa and Vrboska, and back to Stari grad. Stari grad literally means “old town”, so we’ll show you some interesting places in this little gem and introduce you with town and island’s history. After short walk, we’ll end up having a late lunch in Stari grad and then we are heading to Hvar, a beautiful old town with one of the biggest square in Dalmatia, picturesque Cathedral, and mighty fort that is overlooking the old town. So let’s take a stroll and check it out together!
3rd Day HVAR – A LAVANDER STORY
Today we’ll start our day with a short van ride from town of Hvar to Stari grad. Starting on our wheels from Stari grad, we take a step of island history and tradition. It’s about lavender… Just after the WWI, one of the local farmers planted a lavender in his garden, while his neighbors laughed at him because he was, as they though, planting flowers. However just after few years our lavender-farmer had made a lavender oil and made a nice profit out of it. Neighbors didn’t laugh anymore, but instead started to plant lavender themselves. The road is taking us near the hamlets from where lavender spread through the island… In the afternoon let’s climb the Hvar’s fort and visit the museum of agava lacework.
4th Day KORČULA – HEARD ABOUT MARCO POLO?
We are leaving the island of Hvar and going to the town of Korčula on the Korčula island. On our biking menu today we offer a ride through wine yards just to reach a sandy beach where you can soak up a little bit of Mediterranean see.
Before dinner, we’ll have a walk through narrow stone streets of Korčula old town. Grid of streets in a shape of a fish bone, surrounded by old protective walls, hides a birth house of Marco Polo.
5th Day KORČULA – BIKE AND SWIM
Today we’ll have a loop cycling route, will be passing Žrnovo and Pupnat hamlets to reach Račišće, where we’ll have a break by taking a swim in crystal clear Adriatic. There is an option for light lunch or just a drink in the beautiful scenery that is surrounding us.
6th Day PELJEŠEC – WINE, SALT AND OYSTERS… OH YEAH, BIKES TOO!
It’s a biking challenge day ahead of us! We’ll start by taking a ferry ride from Korčula island to amazing peninsula of Pelješac. We’ll start our pedalling from a viewpoint, but they who really want to sweat, can try cycling more than 10 km uphill to reach the viewpoint first. As we cycle you can enjoy the view to the numerous wineyards, as Pelješac peninsula is one of the top location when it comes to wine production. So we’ll definitely stop in one of the cellars to check out some authentic Pelješac wines. Our destination on this cycling route is the town of Stone. Old little town of Stone is surrounded with one of the longest protective walls in the world, thanks to salt production that was of great importance
back in history. Though, Stone is known by another thing… oysters! So let’s treat ourselves with some amazing sea food before heading to Dubrovnik, pearl of Adriatic.
In the evening let’s have a walk through old town Dubrovnik, one of the most beautiful towns in the world. Renaissance town wrapped up with thick walls and with fairytale-style architecture, one might feel like in some other world or in another century.
7th Day DUBROVNIK – THE GAME OF BICYCLES
Today is a relaxing biking day in Dubrovnik hinterland, Konavle region. Konavle was a region that fed Dubrovnik, and it’s not much changed till this day. Although today they are more oriented in wine production so to compare it with wine production in Pelješac, we will make a stop and have a sip.
After easy going cycling day you’ll have some free time to enjoy Dubrovnik on your own. Maybe to visit Lokrum island or to take cable car for some breathtaking views of Dubrovnik filming locations of “The Game of Thrones”.
In the evening, let’s have farewell dinner all together!
